Back To Basics - Getting Back to the Minima Template

Many of you have probably noticed the new "Design" button on Blogger. Some people have tried out the new templates and accidentally clicked on "Apply to Blog", with out meaning to. When you do this, one of the new templates is applied and you can not go back to Minima from this screen. If you would like to go back to Minima again, in order to use the Backgrounds from this site, or one of the other free background sites out there. Here's a step by step tutorial showing you how. Unfortunately if you did apply one of the new templates you will have lost any Html customizations that you may have done or paid to have done, like adding a third column and these will need to be redone again.

Step 1)
Here you see (above) we are in the new Blogger Template Designer. Click on "Back
to Blogger".

Step 2)Next click on "Edit HTML". Don't worry, we are not going to touch the HTML!!

Step 3)
Now were are in the HTML screen. Scroll past the Html to the bottom of the page.

Step 4) Click on "Select Layout Template".

Step 5) Select the Minima template. And click on "Save Template".

Step 6) Now you have reverted back to the old Blogger and you can add your backgrounds again, the way you normally would.

Keep in mind, if you did not change to the new templates you don't have to do any of this, you can still change out the backgrounds the same way that you always have!

Over the next few weeks I will be working on figuring out how to get my backgrounds to work with the new Designer, for those that want to use it and all of its features. I have it mostly figured out now, but I have one small detail to work out yet.

  1. Thank you so much! Yes, I was one of those who thought they'd play around with the new "Design," and then lost my old Minima template. Wah!

    Thank you, thank you!

  6. This is really a great help, thank you so much! I clicked the new buttons of the template-designer and lost all my settings...
Yesterday I still wanted to go back to my former template, but now I´m getting used to the new one, which is quite nice, I think. Thank you anyway, I´ll keep these steps in mind! :)
    Best regards, Marjolijn

  7. Am I the only one who really dislikes this new feature? It's really annoying and I've let Blogger know how I feel.

  8. Olive,
    Oh yes... loads! haha

    Marjolijn,
There are some cool features on the new template. I will be working on converting my backgrounds to work with the new templates soon, so that you can have both!

    Eve,
I just wish they wouldn't have made it such an either or option. Why couldn't they have added the new templates and just kept the old ones along side of them. Then we could have one big menu to pick from. It's confusing to a lot of people I think.

  9. Thank you for this post- I barely escaped with blog intact when this came up the first day, and have since been anxious as to how to retrieve stuff if I do accidentalyy ruin the layout. I'm sure a LOT of people will be glad of this tutorial over the next few weeks!

  10. Thanks. The only thing I did was change my header last night but this morning when I opened my blog, poof...no background. Guess that was enough. Header's still there though!

  11. I too started playing with the new design button. Funny thing though, I never hit save. It just decided to save it all by itself. Totally freaked me out.

Thanks for fixing everything!! You rock!

I'll be looking forward to your fixes for the new design. I do like that they give you a choice of how many columns you want in your blog. I had never gotten around to changing mine to 3 columns.

  17. Hi Bonjade,
I'm afraid I don't know why that would happen, but the new template designer may still have bugs in it, since it is so new. You can follow the instructions on this post to take you back to Minima again, and perhaps the links will work again.

  28. I did have minima and today tried t apply stretch minima and it completely changed my blog! It changed the fonts, colors, and removed all my sidebar pictures, followers, bloglist, etc. I am very very sad. I don't know how to restore it...is there a way to restore it??? I didn't even go near the new templates and it did this. Also if I have to completely re-do my blog I cannot find the layout button for the fonts and colors anywhere? Please help if you can. thank you

  30. Thanks so much for your tips - I have just created a blog and used this minima and the navigation bar posts to do so. Wasn't sure how to give you credit since I am brand new, so just pasted the address for these topics into my first posting. Hope that is okay.

  37. Hi- I added a background from here, then changed up, then changed back to Minima. The problem is that now I cannot for the life of me find the HTML for the background (which is still there when you view the blog in firefox but not in Chrome) and I want to change it to another background...any help for where it might be hidden? Thanks!

I just want to get back to plain white, so I can start my design again!

  38. I LOVE LOVE YOU!! I haven't blogged in a while so imagine my surprise and panic when I went to start a new blog and yes, I clicked save and a whole new scary blogger flew at me! ( I'm telling you, it was like the birds in that scary Alfred Hitchcock movie!) I come here and read this and click, click presto, blogger-land is a familiar friend. With only NICE birds from THE Background Fairy! Did I mention that I LOVE you? In a non stalker, non Hitchcock way.
